An East Point, Ga. police detective died in surgery on May 28 from complications of injuries he sustained in the line of duty 12 years ago.
Detective Toure Heywood was then an officer at Georgia State University on Sept. 30, 2003 when he was run over by suspects during a traffic stop, according to WSB-TV.
Heywood had pulled over a group of kids in what he thought was a routine traffic stop. Suddenly, another vehicle struck the car he pulled over head-on before hitting him.
Doctors removed his spleen and his gallbladder. Toure’s stomach, liver, pancreas, upper bowel and lower bowel all needed to be replaced. He was put on a donors list for a multivisceral organ transplant.
Heywood was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had previously served as a corrections officer before joining the Georgia State University Police Department.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
