A California Highway Patrol officer died early Wednesday after crashing his cruiser following a possible medical emergency.
Officer Miguel Cano, 34, and his partner were transporting a detainee at about 12:30 a.m., KTLA-TV reports. That's when Cano told his partner that he wasn't feeling well and apparently losing consciousness before the cruiser crashed into a tree, Commissioner Sean Duryee said at a morning press conference.
Cano was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Cano's partner and the detainee both suffered minor injuries.
Although the incident is under investigation, Duryee said officials didn't think "the crash was consistent with the fatal injuries."
Cano had been with the agency since 2023. He is survived by his wife and parents.
“We are devastated by the loss of Officer Cano, who gave his life while serving the people of California,” Duryee said in a statement. “His dedication, courage and commitment to public safety will never be forgotten. We stand with his family and our CHP family during this incredibly difficult time.”
