A Vanderburgh, Indiana Sheriff's deputy sustained minor injuries after he was struck by a vehicle driven by a suspected shoplifter in a mall parking lot Saturday.

Marilyn Elaine Cosby was arrested after hitting the deputy and running over his foot outside Eastland Mall in Evansville, according to The Courier & Press.

The deputy was working a uniformed off-duty job at the mall when a 911 call came in regarding a shoplifter and security directed the deputy to the suspect's vehicle. The deputy then attempted to stop the vehicle when the sedan began to drive away.

Cosby's vehicle continued a short distance before driving over a curb into a grassy section of the parking lot. The deputy approached the open window of the vehicle and began giving commands and attempted to remove the key from the ignition, but the 58-year-old put the car in reverse and accelerated, dragging the deputy.

The deputy was thrown onto the vehicle's hood and then onto the pavement next to the front left tire of the car. The woman then drove forward running over the deputy's foot, shielded from serious injury by safety toe boots, before the car hit the deputy's vehicle and a second parked vehicle.

Cosby was arrested at that time without further incident and was interviewed and booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail where she was preliminary charged with four felonies and one misdemeanor including shoplifting, battery on law enforcement and resisting law enforcement.

The deputy was treated at and released from St. Vincent Evansville. He sustained cuts and pain from scrapes to his arm and leg but returned to work after being released.
