A Sugar Land police officer was sitting inside his cruiser while working at the scene of a previous traffic accident when his vehicle was struck by a pickup truck.

A Texas police officer was critically injured while he was blocking traffic at a crash scene early Sunday.

Sugar Land police responded to a single-vehicle accident just before 2 a.m. along U.S. 59, KPRC-TV reports. Officer Ruben Munoz was tasked with blocking traffic in the HOV lane while a tow truck was on the way to clean up the crash.

As he was blocking traffic, Munoz was struck by a pickup truck while he was still inside his cruiser. Medics treated an unconscious Munoz at the scene, and while this was happening, a Jeep ran into the pickup truck.

Munoz was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery. The pickup's driver suffered injuries that weren't considered life-threatening, and as of Sunday, the Jeep's driver was still in critical condition.
