N.Y. Police Officer Struck by Suspected Drunk Driver

A Suffolk County police officer underwent brain surgery after he was injured while working the scene of an accident along William Floyd Parkway.

A New York police officer underwent brain surgery after he was struck by a suspected drunken driver at an accident scene early Wednesday.

The incident happened at about midnight as Suffolk County Police Officer Timothy Thrane was working the scene of a crash along William Floyd Parkway, WCBS-TV reports. An SUV stopped to ask Thrane a question when an alleged drunken driver struck it from behind.

The impact sent the SUV spinning, and it struck Thrane. He was taken to the hospital, and he underwent brain surgery.

Thrane was a three-year veteran of the Suffolk County Police Department. Before that, he worked as a New York City corrections officer.

The drunken driver also was serious injured by the crash.
