Greensboro Police Department — A Greensboro, AL, police officer was wounded when a driver opened fire during a Thursday traffic stop.

A 64-year-old Alabama man was killed in an exchange of gunfire during a traffic stop that also wounded a police officer.

Alabama State Troopers on Friday identified the slain man as Robert Williams. He lived in Greensboro.

The ordeal began about 7:30 p.m. Thursday when a Greensboro officer stopped Williams in the 1000 block of Blount Street. The stop happened in a parking space at Magnolia Village Apartments.

Williams, said ALEA Capt. Jeremy Burkett, pulled a gun and shot the officer. The officer returned fire, hitting Williams.

Williams was taken to Hale County Hospital where he later died.

“The (district attorney’s) office extends it deepest condolences to the Williams family and to all who loved him,” District Attorney Robert Turner said in a Friday statement. “May he rest in peace.”

The officer was taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical treatment.

ALEA did not identify the officer, but District Attorney Robert Turner identified the officer as Officer Miguel Edwards who has only been on the force a couple of months. He is recovering and in stable condition.

“Officer Edwards is currently resting and is reported to be in pain as he continues his recovery,” Turner said. “We ask the community keep Officer Edwards and his family in their thoughts and prayers as he works toward healing.”

As is standard procedure for many officer involved shootings, the State Bureau of Investigation will lead the probe.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured Greensboro police officer and his family as he continues to receive care,” ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor said.

“What began as a traffic stop, which is never routine, quickly turned into a life-threatening situation, underscoring the dangers officers face every day,” Taylor said. “Incidents like this weigh heavily on the entire law enforcement community.”

“We are praying for the officer’s full recovery and will continue to stand alongside the family and fellow officers during this difficult time,” Taylor said.

The investigation is ongoing by the State Bureau of Investigation.
