A sheriff’s deputy in Crittenden County was injured in a shooting Thursday, according to Kentucky State Police and local reports.

The Crittenden Press reported the shooting happened around 5 p.m. at a home on Kentucky 365, between Mattoon and Sturgis. A Crittenden County sheriff’s deputy and another person were shot during a welfare check. It was unclear what role that person had in the incident.

The Crittenden County Clerk’s Office said the deputy was seriously injured. The Crittenden Press reported the deputy was taken to a regional hospital

“Please allow your thoughts, prayers and consideration for those involved serve over all else for the good of our community,” the Crittenden County clerk’s office said in a Facebook post.

Several law enforcement agencies offered support for the sheriff’s office in Facebook posts. The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, which assisted at the scene, confirmed a deputy was shot during the incident.

“Please keep all those involved in your thoughts and prayers,” the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

The status of the other person who was shot was unavailable Friday morning, but the Crittenden Press reported that the coroner was at the scene. A third person was taken to a hospital, but they were not shot.

State police’s Critical Incident Response Team has been requested to investigate the shooting. State police spokesperson Sherry Bray said more information will be released when it’s available.

The shooting happened about 230 miles west of Lexington, near the Kentucky- Illinois border.
