CROMWELL, CT — A Connecticut State Police trooper was patrolling Interstate 91 Wednesday morning when they saw a Mercedes speeding at more than 130 mph, the agency said.
When the trooper tried to stop the vehicle, the driver instead accelerated away, making unsafe lane changes and weaving in and out of traffic, engaging the trooper in a pursuit, according to state police. Troopers later spoke to the driver, identified as 19-year-old Azmir Djurkovic, on the phone and he provided a reason for the reckless driving.
Djurkovic "stated he did not stop because he was late for a job interview," Connecticut State Police said in a news release.
The speeding occurred on I-91 south near Exit 22 in Cromwell around 8:55 a.m. Wednesday. State police confirmed with a speed laser unit that the Mercedes E300 was going 132 mph, state police said.
When the Mercedes tried to elude the trooper, the trooper stopped the chase due to the hazard posed to the public, according to state police.
Troopers later contacted the registered owner of the vehicle, who explained a family member was driving the car at the time of the incident. After speaking with troopers on the phone, Djurkovic agreed to meet at Troop H in Hartford, state police said.
Djurkovic, of Cromwell, is charged with reckless driving, disobeying the signal of an officer, failure to maintain lane, passing on the right, improper turn, passing at an unsafe distance, engaging police in a pursuit, interfering with an officer and first-degree reckless endangerment.
He is free on a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear at state Superior Court in Middletown June 17, police said.
