ENFIELD, CT — Two state troopers suffered injuries after they were struck by a car on Interstate 91 north Thursday morning, Connecticut State Police said.
The area of Exit 47E had been reopened as of 4:30 p.m., according to the state Department of Transportation site, as an investigation into the crash remained underway, police said.
Police said the troopers were responding to a multi-vehicle crash by Exit 47W and 48 around 7 a.m. Police said one trooper was inside their cruiser, a 2020 Ford Police Interceptor Utility (PIU), and another was standing near that vehicle when they were struck.
In an update Thursday afternoon, police said a 2010 Acura TSX drove through some standing water in the left lane before starting to spin.
The car "spun across the northbound lanes and entered into the right shoulder. While within the right shoulder, the Acura TSX collided into the 2020 Ford PIU," police said.
The Ford was pushed into the trooper standing outside the vehicle, and they were "projected into the roadside," police said.
The trooper inside the vehicle sustained either minor or moderate injuries, police said. The trooper who was struck was seriously injured, and they were all transported to nearby hospitals, police said.
Occupants of the vehicle that struck the troopers all sustained minor to moderate injuries, police said.
"The two state troopers who were injured on 91 today while doing their jobs, our best goes out to the troopers and their families," State Attorney General William Tong said Thursday. "It underscores how much risk our troopers take every single day across Connecticut, keeping Connecticut families and Connecticut roadways safe. It also underscores how important the new laws coming down hard on reckless driving are going to be in making sure that our roadways are safe for all of us."
