A veteran Jersey City police lieutenant was struck and killed on the New Jersey Turnpike early Friday morning.
Lt. Christopher Robateau was driving to work when he stopped to help a motorist shortly after 6:30 a.m. near mile marker 104 when he was hit, according to The Jersey Journal.
The 49-year-old spent 23 years with the police department. He first joined the force in 1994 and was promoted to lieutenant in October 2014.
"The only thing he loved more then the police department was his wife and children," Deputy Police Chief Daniel Sollitti told the newspaper . "His family was everything in his heart."
Funeral arrangements are pending.
