A Tacoma police officer shot and injured a young man who allegedly rammed the officer's patrol car with a stolen vehicle Sunday night.
The man was taken to a hospital for treatment. He was expected to survive his injuries, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said Monday.
The 31-year-old officer who shot the man has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure when an officer uses deadly force. The officer has been on the force for two years, Fulghum said.
The officer had stopped the man shortly before 9:30 p.m. Sunday in an alley near East 34th and F streets, Fulghum said. The reason for the stop wasn't immediately known.
The officer was out of his patrol car when the driver put the vehicle in reverse and struck the officer's car.
The officer fired several shots at the vehicle, striking the driver, Fulghum said.
The officer was not injured.
The department reported that the vehicle the man was driving had been reported stolen. It wasn't immediately known whether the officer knew the car was stolen before the shooting or if investigators discovered that afterward.
