The Austin Police Department's new unit, which is still in the pilot phase, will focus on drones in order to protect officers on dangerous calls and keep the public safe at events.
A Texas police department has created a robotics unit that will have a focus on drones.
The Austin Police Department's new unit, which is still in the pilot phase, will be managed by two FAA drone-certified officers on a special assignment basis, KUVE-TV reports. The main focus will be on protecting officers during critical incidents, keeping the public safety at large events and monitoring illegal activity.
"Because it is such new technology, we are really trying to figure out where we fit into the enforcement of those unauthorized drones. Working with our partners, we are just trying to create the best policy in place," Assistant Chief Scott Perry told KUVE.
