What to Know

  • Colorado Springs police arrested a man accused of repeatedly calling 911 more than 280 times in an alleged attempt to overwhelm the emergency communications system.
  • Officers responding to the suspect's residence earlier in the day also investigated a reported burglary involving the man's brother, although no arrest was made in that incident.
  • After the suspect refused to leave the home, officers established containment, attempted to de-escalate the situation and ultimately arrested him inside the residence.

Colorado Springs police on Sunday arrested a man suspected of trying to cause the emergency communications system to crash by calling it nearly 300 times, according to an online blotter entry.

At about 7:50 a.m., officers responding to an unspecified call for service in the 1500 block of Shane Circle, near Centennial Boulevard and Garden of the Gods Road, discovered a related service call about a burglary in which the suspect broke into his brother’s room and stole a camera, officials said. No arrests were made in the incident.

Later that day, officers went to the same residence to contact a man who was reportedly attempting to “break 911” by calling in more than 280 times over the course of a day.

The suspect, identified as David Ancell, refused to exit his residence, police said. Officers set up containment while trying to convince Ancell to surrender peacefully.

After several unsuccessful attempts to de-escalate the situation, an arrest team entered the home and arrested Ancell.

Ancell, 41, is being held on a $10,000 bond, jail records show.
