Idaho Sheriff's Office Identifies Deputy Struck and Killed by Patrol Car While Searching for Suspect

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office has identified the deputy who was struck and killed by a fellow deputy driving a patrol car while searching for a woman wielding a machete early Monday morning as Deputy Wyatt Maser.

BONE, Idaho -- The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office has identified the deputy who was struck and killed by a fellow deputy driving a patrol car while searching for a suspect early Monday morning.

Deputy Wyatt Maser was on patrol in the area of Bone Road and 9th Street around 5:18 a.m. when he responded to assist another deputy attempting to take a woman into custody who was wielding a machete, according to a news release.

Sgt. Randy Flegel, who was responding to the area to assist came upon the three in the roadway, struck Maser with his patrol car.

The impact caused severe injuries and responding deputies began life saving efforts, which were continued by Idaho Falls Fire and Air Idaho Rescue as they arrived. Maser was transported to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.  

Maser joined the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office in April of 2019

The female involved was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for medical treatment and a mental health evaluation.

"The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office wants to extend its appreciation and thanks to the many individuals, agencies, and businesses from around the state and country who have reached out and expressed their condolences to our agency and the family of our fallen deputy," officials said in a statement.  Deputy Maser was known as a hard working member of our team and family, and our hearts are filled with sadness at his loss. 

Full details on funeral arrangements are pending at this time, however it is tentatively scheduled for Friday May 22nd in the Idaho Falls area. 

Many have reached out to our office inquiring about donations to the Maser family.  A memorial fund had been set up by the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #8 at the ISU Credit Union in Idaho Falls under the name “Bonneville County FOP, Wyatt Maser Memorial Account.”  Those wishing to donate can contact ISU Credit Union by phone to make arrangements – 208-235-7100.  We will release more details on funeral arrangements as they are set in the near future. 

Maser is survived by his wife, Paige Maser and his daughter, Morgan Emily Maser.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, May 22 at Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery, 4602 S. Yellowstone Highway. Rites will be performed by the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard and surrounding agencies.
