Washington, DC - The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund announces the launch of a new cell phone audio tour of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, the nation's monument to peace officers killed in the line of duty.
Visitors to the Memorial, located in Washington, DC's Judiciary Square, can now follow a guided audio tour by calling (202) 747-3461. A brochure and walking tour map serve as a companion to the audio tour. The tour covers important dates in law enforcement history, telling the stories of some of the 18,661 fallen officers whose names are engraved on the Memorial's walls.
For example, the audio tour remembers the 72 officers killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the deadliest day in law enforcement history. Stops along the tour include other historically significant examples of law enforcement sacrifice, such as the six officers killed by Billy the Kid and officers who have died protecting the President, including Dallas Police Officer J.D. Tippit, who was fatally shot by Lee Harvey Oswald shortly after the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The audio tour also provides a history of the Memorial, with information on its dedication, its grounds and statuary, and its significance to honoring America's law enforcement heroes.
"Each year, more than a quarter million people visit the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial," said Memorial Fund Chairman and CEO Craig W. Floyd. "The cell phone tour is one more way for us to reach out to the community and tell the story of the law enforcement officers who protect us every day," he said.
Located in the 400 block of E Street, NW, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is open to the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There is no admission fee to visit the Memorial.
