Great Mills HS Shooting March 2018

Nov. 6, 2018
Cited as "the best type of response," the SRO's immediate response to the reported shooting in the school countered the poor response still fresh in people's minds from the Marjory Stoneman Douglass HS attack the month before.

In what is truly a unique circumstance, the shooting at Great Mills High School in Southern Maryland directly affected our editorial director’s morning. On March 20th, 2018, when it occurred, our Editorial Director was at home prepping for his work day as he would any other. He is still a sworn and empowered police officer though, and when the news went out via Nixel about the shooting, and believing that an active shooter event was on-going, our Editorial Director (Frank Borelli) started to “armor up and grab his gear,” as he puts it. His first intent was to respond to the school to assist in the capacity of an officer. Before he could get out of his house, it was reported that the scene was secure, so he switched gears, redressed and responded to the designated media rally point for the event, representing Officer.com.

Great Mills is an unincorporated part of St. Mary’s County, just south of Lexington Park and not far from Patuxent River Naval Air Station. The community is a mix of low-to-middle income families, military families and some Amish families.
