A Prince George's County police officer was saved by a volunteer EMT after becoming sick inside his cruiser earlier this month.
Officer Ricardo Biddy, who also serves as a Seat Pleasant volunteer EMT, was leaving his firehouse following his shift in his police cruiser and drove home, according to a news release.
As he pulled up in front of his home 15 minutes from the fire station, he was on the phone with his friend, EMT Phil Martin.
While sitting inside his cruiser, his speech suddenly became slurred and incoherent and then the call disconnected.
Martin immediately called public safety communications who dispatched police, fire and EMS to the scene.
The EMT then jumped into his personal vehicle and traced Biddy’s route home. Once he located his cruiser, he found his friend unresponsive inside. Other emergency units soon arrived and rushed Biddy where he was treated.
It was determined that Biddy’s cruiser was leaking carbon monoxide, poisoning the officer.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Martin was given the Prince George's County Fire Department’s Emergency Service Award for his "quick thinking and immediate action to help save the life of a fellow member and friend."
