VERNON, N.Y. — According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, a motor vehicle caught on fire following a two-car motor vehicle accident on State Route 5 in the Town of Vernon.
On Saturday, April 6 at around 9:44 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the area of State Route 5 in the town of Vernon. They had received reports regarding a motor vehicle accident with an occupant still inside of a burning vehicle. Upon arrival, deputies and bystanders were able to remove the driver, Nathan Petrie, 44, Oneida from the burning vehicle.
Deputies later determined that Petrie suffered a medical emergency while operating a 2023 Subaru SUV. During the emergency, Petrie moved from his lane into oncoming traffic and collided with a 2015 Toyota SUV being operated by Dennis Galstian, 19, Syracuse.
Petrie's vehicle then collided with a guide rail before coming to rest. Petrie had three juveniles inside of his car at the time of the collision and none were injured. Emergency personnel treated Petrie on scene for his medical emergency and no parties, including Galstian, were injured from the collision.
A traffic citation was issued to Petrie for the lane violation that is returnable to the Vernon Town Court on a later date.
The sheriff's office was assisted by the New York State Police, Vernon Fire Department, Vineall Ambulance and bystanders on scene.
