Video: Boston Police Patrol Boat Rushes Stranded Groom to Wedding

Boston police made a different kind of rescue this weekend when they rushed to the aid of a groom who was stranded on a disabled ferry en route to his wedding ceremony on a Boston Harbor island where his bride-to-be was already waiting.

The police patrol boat was called in on Saturday to aid in what officers described as a “dire” situation when a ferry that was carrying the groom and other key members of the wedding party became temporarily disabled while docked in Boston Harbor.

The bride was already on Thompson Island preparing for the wedding ceremony scheduled for later that day, police said.

“The officers quickly responded to assist but when they arrived to escort the groom, they realized that the situation was dire, as several other members of the wedding party were also without a means of transport in addition to the photographer, the D.J. and all the decorative flowers for the ceremony,” police wrote in a press release. “The officers took it upon themselves to ensure that all parties involved, as well as the floral arrangements, made it safely to their intended destination out in the harbor.”

Officers escorted all stranded members to Thompson Island by patrol boat, police said. Thompson Island is one of the largest and most accessible of the harbor islands and frequently hosts weddings during the summer months.

Boston Police Officer Joe Matthews returned to Thompson Island after the ceremony to share a laugh and congratulate the newly married couple before they returned to their reception surrounded by their friends, families and loved ones, police said.

Police offered their congratulations to the couple.

“We thank our officers for going above and beyond the call of duty to make sure [the couple] could enjoy it together,” according to a statement.
