Video: Sex Offender Steals Federal SUV, Kicks Off 2-State, High-Speed Chase
Body and dashboard camera footage captured a sprawling high-speed chase that sprawled across two states—from Oregon to Washington—after a registered sex offender took off in a U.S. Department of Homeland Security while agents were executing a search warrant in April.
The incident happened April 24 when federal investigators were trying to execute a search warrant at the Portland, Oregon, home of Travis Grygla 43, a registered sex offender, KGW-TV reports. When agents discovered a secret cellphone, Grygla—who sat by himself in the front passenger seat of a Homeland Security SUV without handcuffs—said, "This is not going to go good for me," according to court documents.
That's when Grygla locked the vehicle's doors and sped away in the federal SUV, which had two guns and other police gear in a lockbox. A chase ensued with multiple law enforcement agencies, traveling from Oregon to Castle Rock, Washington, and reaching speeds of around 120 mph.
Spike strips were deployed multiple times during the pursuit, and it appeared that Grygla was able to avoid them. After 60 miles, one of the strips was able to damage a tire on the vehicle, and officers used a PIT maneuver, which flipped over the SUV.
Grygla was apprehended by authorities and arrested on an outstanding warrant and other charges. His arraignment is set for July.
