A suspect in a domestic incident was shot and wounded while stealing a New Castle County police cruiser, kicking off a two-state pursuit that ended in Chester.

A Delaware police officer was injured Thursday after a man allegedly stole a police cruiser and led authorities on a wild chase into Pennsylvania before he was taken into custody.

The incident started at about 2:45 a.m. when police responded to a domestic incident in Milltown, Delaware, WPVI-TV reports. When officers reached the scene, the suspect—identified as Tyrese Knuckles—fled on foot.

A New Castle County police officer confronted Knuckles, and a struggle ensued. As the two fought, the officer shot and wounded Knuckles.

But the shooting didn't subdue Knuckles, who stole the officer's cruiser and sped away. Other officers pursued the suspect as he headed for the Pennsylvania border.

Knuckles led police on a 20-mile chase into Pennsylvania before finally crashing in Chester. The suspect tried to flee on foot again, but he was apprehended.

A New Castle County police officer was rushed to the hospital in stable condition after suffering injuries from an initial collision involving Knuckles, who also was hospitalized for gunshot wounds and crash injuries.

According to police, Knuckles also was wanted in Philadelphia for stalking.

The incident is under investigation.
