Two Columbus police officers were transporting an inmate to jail when an alleged drunken driver ran a red light and struck the officers' cruiser before fleeing the scene.

Two Ohio police officers were among four people injured when an allegedly impaired hit-and-run driver collided with a cruiser carrying an inmate to jail early Friday.

The incident happened at about 2:45 a.m. as two Columbus police officers were taking a prisoner from police headquarters to jail, WCMH-TV reports. That's when a suspected drunken driver ran a red light and T-boned the officers' cruiser.

According to police, the driver of the other vehicle fled the scene, but police caught up with him about a half-mile away, WBNS-TV reports. The suspect eventually was apprehended after he tried to run from officers again.

The four people in the crash—including the suspected drunken driver—were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
