A pursuit that started when California Highway Patrol officers spotted a stolen SUV in Los Angeles County led to a standoff when the suspect refused to get out of the vehicle.
A wild chase with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) on Friday led to a standoff and a suspect in a stolen SUV spinning his wheels until the rubber on one tire flew off.
The chase began just before 6:15 p.m. when CHP officers spotted a possible stolen Dodge Durango in Los Angeles County, KTTV-TV reports. Officers pursued the suspect through East Los Angeles and the San Gabriel Valley and tried an PIT maneuver, which failed to stop the vehicle.
During the chase, the suspect's front passenger-side tire blew out, and the pursuit stopped in a residential neighborhood. The suspect refused to get out of the vehicle, and he spun his wheels and kicked up smoke when the SUV was pinned by a cruiser.
The standoff lasted until about 6:45 p.m. when CHP officers forced open the driver's door and placed the suspect in custody.
