Colo. Deputy Collides with Vehicle to Stop Wrong-Way Driver

"I thought I need to put an end to this before someone gets seriously hurt or killed," said Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Hutton after crashing head-on into a vehicle traveling the wrong way.

A Colorado sheriff's deputy collided with a vehicle to stop a wrong-way driver who was possibly suffering from a medical issue Sunday.

The incident happened after the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office received numerous reports of a vehicle traveling the wrong direction along Interstate 70, just east of Arriba, KUSA-TV reports. Deputy Michael Hutton tried to get the driver, a 58-year-old woman, to pull over but was unsuccessful.

"I thought I need to put an end to this before someone gets seriously hurt or killed," Hutton told KUSA.

"I thought about my family, my unborn child on the way in about a month, and I had a duty to preserve life and, in this case, that took over," he added.

Finally, Hutton crashed head-on into the vehicle to stop it. He suffered minor injuries, and the driver was taken to hospital after possibly having a medical emergency while driving.

This isn't the first time Hutton has been caught in a perilous incident while on the job. Last year, he was shot three time trying to stop a theft near Hugo. Although he was wearing a bulletproof vest, none of the shots struck the body armor.

The accused shooter was found in a field, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
