Three California Highway Patrol officers were injured in a fiery crash while providing traffic control for a previous accident early Thursday.
The incident happened shortly before 1:30 a.m. along the 105 Freeway in Downey, KABC-TV reports. Authorities were responding to a crash that had happened in the area earlier.
A trio of CHP officers were working traffic control at the scene when another vehicle slammed into a patrol car. The violent crash ignited a fireball, which engulfed the patrol car.
"They flew right past me," said witness Robert Martinez about the vehicle that struck the cruiser. "CHP had the lane closed with flares out. The driver applied no brakes and went straight into the CHP car, all four wheels off the ground."
Three CHP officers were taken to the hospital following the crash. A civilian driver also was injured and taken to the hospital.
