A Colorado sheriff's deputy used his cruiser to stop a wrong-way driver hurdling down the interstate last week.
The incident happened shortly after 11 p.m. April 11 when Adams County sheriff's deputies received a call from the Colorado State Patrol to help stop a driver traveling the wrong way along Interstate 70, the sheriff's office said in an online statement. Deputies were able to stop traffic ahead of the wrong-way driver, who continued to approach the stopped vehicles.
Before the driver could reach them, a deputy positioned his cruiser in the vehicle's path, causing a collision. The impact of the crash knocked both vehicles over 140 feet and into a stopped tractor-trailer.
The deputy and the driver didn't sustain major injuries, and were treated medical as a precaution. Both vehicles were severely damaged in the collision.
"There is no doubt that without the deputy’s quick action and bravery several vehicles would have been struck at high speeds and lives would have been lost," the sheriff's office stated.
The 83-year-old driver was cited for careless driving and driving in the wrong lane, KUSA-TV reports.
