Metal Rod Pierces Moving Ariz. Police Car's Window, Misses Officer

A metal piece of debris punctured a police car’s windshield, nearly striking the officer on an Arizona highway, authorities said.

The debris flew into the officer’s car around 9:25 a.m. while they were driving on the U.S. Route 60 in Mesa on April 9, police said.

A photo shows the metal rod narrowly missing the driver’s side. The piece of debris appears to be part of a luggage rack, police said.

The officer was in an unmarked police Ford Crown Victoria traveling to a “departmental special event” when the object struck the car, police said.

The officer was able to safely pull over, police said.

Police said the officer had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital but is now “doing well.”

Authorities do not know where the metal debris came from, so they have not issued any citations, police said.
