A San Antonio police officer is accused of abandoning a department vehicle on railroad tracks following a crash.
Police found the vehicle—a traffic unit with low-profile markings—just east of the downtown area over the weekend, KSAT-TV reports. The unit's laptop and its license plate had been removed.
Investigators spoke with Officer Nesta Reid, who was assigned to the vehicle, about what had happened. He told police that he had parked the vehicle at a department substation Friday, and records indicate that's where the unit was when Reid signed off.
But according to police, Reid had crashed into a barrier, causing a small amount of damage to the vehicle. He allegedly tried to cover up the accident before leaving the vehicle on the tracks.
Reid, who has been with the department for five years, was arrested and charged with theft of a vehicle, obstructing a passageway/roadway, and tampering with physical evidence. He has been suspended without pay.
The investigation is ongoing.
