Buffalo Police to Receive 105 New Vehicles as Part of Major Fleet Upgrade

The Buffalo Police Department is set to receive over 100 new marked and unmarked vehicles as part of a fleet replacement effort to improve reliability and reduce downtime caused by aging equipment.

What to Know

  • Buffalo officials unveiled new police vehicles as part of a broader public safety investment aimed at replacing the department’s aging fleet.
  • The police department will receive 105 marked and unmarked vehicles through a $2.1 million leasing program.
  • City leaders say the fleet upgrade is the first phase of a five-year plan to replace all 337 police vehicles.

"We are thrilled to be adding over one hundred vehicles to our aged and damaged fleet," Shields said in a statement. "Our officers require a functional vehicle fleet to adequately perform their jobs. Today is a major step in appropriately equipping them for the current task at hand and a significant investment in future of the department."

The department has already received 17 new unmarked vehicles and seven marked cruisers. By January, 62 marked and 43 unmarked vehicles will be delivered to the agency.

Officials say the police department's 337-vehicle fleet is set to be replaced over the next five years. The city will finance the vehicles a $2.1 million leasing program.

“Our police officers and firefighters need vehicles they can count on when someone calls for help,” Ryan said in a statement. “For too long, Buffalo has relied on aging equipment that spends too much time in the repair shop. Fixing the basics means making sure our first responders have the tools to do their jobs safely and effectively. These investments will help us provide the reliable emergency services every Buffalo neighborhood deserves.”
