Occupants of a Pennsylvania State Police vehicle involved in a fatal multiple-car crash Saturday night on Route 283 in East Hempfield Township remained hospitalized Monday morning, according to police.
Heather Bare, 48, of New Salem, York County, was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of Route 283 near Landisville in a Mercedes sedan around 10:30 p.m. when she collided with an EMS vehicle and then struck the state police car head-on, police said Sunday.
The EMS team involved in the crash remained at the scene and began rendering aid to those inside the other two vehicles. Multiple people were removed from the state police car and transported to Lancaster General Hospital, where police on Sunday said they were in stable condition.
Contacted Monday morning, state police did not immediately respond to questions about who was in the state police car, if anyone with the EMS team was injured, and what the status of those taken to LGH was Monday morning.
Bare was the sole occupant of the Mercedes. She was transported to LGH, where the Lancaster County Coroner's Office pronounced her dead. The coroner's office is investigating her death.
The crash was first reported by Lancaster County-Wide Communications dispatchers around 10:30 p.m., and additional troopers responded around 10:37 p.m.
Officials with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation reported Sunday that four vehicles were involved in the crash and that three people, including Bare, were transported to LGH.
Route 283 was closed in both directions for several hours late Saturday and reopened early Sunday morning.
Police continue to investigate the crash and are asking anyone with information to contact the Pennsylvania State Police Troop J barracks at 717-299-7650.
