GARY, Indiana -- A Lake County sheriff's officer was hospitalized Wednesday evening and is expected to recover after being struck in a head-on collision during a pursuit in Gary, Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said.

"Two people in the suspect’s vehicle were also hospitalized," Martinez said.

The pursuit in question began sometime after 6 p.m. Wednesday with suspect’s vehicle heading northbound at a high rate of speed on Ralston Street, according to the sheriff. The vehicle reportedly struck the officer's vehicle head-on in the area of 9th Avenue.

"The officer is being treated for multiple cuts, and other injuries and is expected to recover," Martinez said.

The driver of the other vehicle was placed into custody and taken to an area hospital for evaluation, police said. A passenger in that other vehicle was extricated by fire personnel and was also transported to the hospital.

The investigation is ongoing, according to police.
