Huntsville Police Officer Sean Brinson remains in critical condition in Intensive Care for injuries he incurred during a freak accident on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
At approximately 1:38 a.m., Huntsville Police officers were dispatched regarding a reported stolen vehicle. At 1:44 a.m., an officer patrolling the area of 8th Street and University Avenue observed a vehicle matching the description traveling westbound on 8th Street.
The officer moved into position behind the vehicle to confirm that it was the stolen vehicle, according to Lt. Wade Roberts.
The vehicle reached Avenue M, where the driver failed to stop at the stop sign, turned northbound and accelerated to a high rate of speed. The officer immediately notified dispatch that the vehicle was fleeing and activated emergency equipment.
The fleeing vehicle continued northbound on Avenue M toward Cottonwood. Brinson, who was traveling southbound on Avenue M to assist, was struck head-on after the driver of the stolen vehicle crossed into the southbound lane.
“A total of 14 seconds elapsed from the time the driver turned at 8th Street and Avenue M until the collision occurred,” Roberts said.
Brinson has already undergone a number of surgeries to address the many injuries he sustained, including to both of his legs. He underwent more surgery on Thursday, Dec. 18. He has additional surgeries scheduled Sunday — days before Christmas.
“Officer Brinson is a former United States Marine who then served with the Dumas, TX, Police Department before relocating to Huntsville in 2021. He and his wife live in Huntsville and have two small children,” Roberts said.
The driver of the stolen vehicle was the sole occupant and sustained serious injuries, being transported from the scene by Walker County EMS to a Houston-area hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Due to the extent of his injuries, the suspect was not arrested or charged at the time. Charges are being considered as the investigation continues.
The vehicle involved was confirmed to be the one reported stolen earlier the previous evening. Additionally, items located inside the vehicle were connected to burglaries reported earlier in the night.
Roberts said the investigation remains ongoing. If an arrest is made and charges are filed, that information will be released at that time.
