A police officer hit a fleeing shooting suspect with his patrol car in the Lloyd District on Wednesday night, knocking the man down, the Portland Police Bureau said.

Officers responded to the 400 block of Northeast Hassalo Street at 9:42 p.m. after receiving reports of a naked man “running around holding a handgun,” police said.

Shortly after arriving at the scene, the officers heard a shot fired and spotted the suspect, holding a gun, running on Northeast Grand Avenue near Multnomah Street. One of the officers “used his police vehicle to strike the armed man, knocking him down and causing him to drop the gun,” the Police Bureau said in a statement.

The suspect, whose name hasn’t been released, got up and started running again, but officers stopped him on Northeast Holladay Street near Grand Avenue. Officers had to use a Taser to take him into custody, police said.

The man is now in a local hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries,” police said.

The Police Bureau Detective Division’s Homicide Unit and the East County Major Crimes Team are investigating the officers’ use of force. In its statement, the Police Bureau said the incident must be investigated “with the utmost thoroughness, professionalism and impartiality so as to determine whether member actions comport with applicable law and Bureau policies and training.”

The officer who struck the suspect with the patrol car is on paid leave, per bureau protocol. Police body-worn camera footage will be released in coming days, officials said.

Police ask anyone with information about the case to send an email to [email protected] or call 503-823-0479.
