What to know

  • Over a dozen law enforcement agencies participated in the 24th annual Cops for Kids Fly-In at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital on Oct. 29.

  • Officers arrived by helicopter, motorcycle and patrol car to visit young patients, showcase equipment, and deliver donated toys, books, and gifts.

  • The event concluded with officers hosting an 18th birthday celebration for a patient, part of the effort to boost morale and bring joy to hospitalized children.

It’s never easy to be in the hospital. And it’s even tougher for children.

That’s why Inland Empire law enforcement agencies take part year after year in the Cops for Kids Fly-In.

The 24th edition came Wednesday, Oct. 29, and again saw helicopters landing outside Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. Joining them was a sea of police motorcycles, squad cars and SWAT vehicles — all arriving to lift the spirits of young patients.

Children got the chance to get out of their rooms and sit inside vehicles and helicopters, meet K-9s and greet law officers, a news release states.

As a bonus, those in uniform also donated toys, books and other gifts to children and delivered them to their rooms.

More than a dozen agencies took part, including the Riverside Police Department, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the Los Angeles Police Department, the California Highway Patrol and the FBI, according to the release.

Peter Baker, senior vice president and administrator of Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, thanked the many officers.

“Not only do you keep us safe, but you also go above and beyond to bring much-needed smiles to our patients,” he said, according to the release.

The day ended with a hospital-room 18th birthday party for Rialto resident Miranda Aosorno, who got gifts, balloons and a rendition of “Happy Birthday” from officers, the release states.
