BERRIEN COUNTY, MI — The driver of a U-Haul box truck was arrested and two others fled the scene after a crash following a police pursuit and a home invasion, police said.

Deputies were called to the area of 5870 Erie St. in Hagar Township for an active breaking and entering in progress based on a neighbor reporting suspicious activity.

Deputies observed a U-Haul speeding away from a home and tried to conduct a traffic stop.

The driver refused to stop, police said, leading deputies on a short pursuit.

The U-Haul stopped momentarily, then reversed, ramming and disabling a patrol vehicle before speeding away again, police said.

The vehicle was later found after crashing into a tree near Hagar Place and Carolyn Street, police said.

One suspect fled the scene on foot and another crawled from the vehicle, while the driver remained inside.

The driver, 47-year-old Ira Clough of South Haven, was arrested.

He was arraigned on charges including fleeing and eluding, aggravated felonious assault, burglary – forced entry, possession of stolen property, damage to property, violation of controlled substance, obstructing police and eight counts of weapons felony firearms.

A check of the residence confirmed forced entry had occurred.

Deputies used police dogs to try to find the two other suspects.

Despite several hours of searching, they were not located.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office is requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the two outstanding individuals for prosecution.
