Ill. Deputy's Controlled Collision Stops Driver with Medical Issue

Oct. 28, 2022
When the Morgan County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of an unresponsive drive in a moving vehicle, a deputy positioned his cruiser to force a controlled crash to stop the car.

A Morgan County deputy forced a controlled accident at 3:34 p.m. Wednesday to stop a vehicle whose driver was experiencing a medical situation.

Deputies responded to a report of a vehicle with an unresponsive driver traveling south near the 1200 block of Sandusky Road.

Sheriff Mike Carmody said a deputy arranged his vehicle to force a controlled accident to stop the vehicle.

"A deputy followed him and positioned hie vehicle to stop his," Carmody said. "After the collision, the deputy found the vehicle locked, but he gained entry and turned off the vehicle."

EMS, Jacksonville Fire Department and Jacksonville Police Department responded to the scene, where medical assistance was given before he was transported to the hospital.

Carmody said Illinois State Police were called to investigate the accident because it involved a law enforcement vehicle. State police are responsible for the final report and the names of those involved.

The condition of the driver who was taken to the hospital was unavailable.
