OAKLAND, CA—An Oakland police officer responding Sunday night to a shooting was injured when his patrol car was hit by a vehicle, police said Monday.

The officer went to a hospital and was in stable condition early Monday, according to police.

The incident began when two other vehicles crashed near 14th and Peralta Streets about 8:40 p.m., police said. After the crash, police said, both vehicles started driving away and somebody on the street began shooting at both of them. The officer responded in a patrol vehicle, which police said was hit by one of the vehicles that may have been involved in the shooting.

The gunshots wounded two people, police said, and both of them were dropped off at a hospital. They were in stable condition Monday morning, police said.

It remained unclear Monday whether the two people wounded in the shooting were in the same vehicle or different ones.

The suspected shooter was seen walking into a house of Peralta Street, where officers located and arrested the person. He was held on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and of possessing illegal firearms.

Three handguns and a rifle were recovered from the house, police said.

No other information was available immediately Monday morning.
