Rollover Crash Sends Ala. Police Officer to the Hospital

Investigators are still trying to find out the cause of a two-vehicle accident on the city's east side that put a Birmingham police SUV on its roof.

A Birmingham police officer was taken to the hospital Wednesday night after a rollover crash on the city’s east side.

The wreck involved two vehiclesa police SUV and a civilian vehicle. It happened at 8:39 p.m. in the 8600 block of First Avenue North. The police cruiser land on its roof.

The officer was transported via police escort to UAB Hospital, arriving shortly before 9:15 p.m.

Police Sgt. Rod Mauldin said it’s unknown at this time if the officer was en route to a call or what caused the accident.

He said the extent of the officer’s injury wasn’t immediately known. The other motorist was not injured.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Jackie Hix said firefighters on the scene reported the injury didn’t appear to be life-threatening.
