Massachusetts State Police Major Injured when Cruiser Rear-Ended

Aug. 12, 2021
While he was making a traffic stop in Bedford, the Massachusetts State Police major's Ford Police Interceptor was struck from behind by a Honda CRV SUV.

A Massachusetts State Police major was injured after pulling over a vehicle on Thursday when an SUV struck his cruiser from behind, police said.

State Police Maj. Matthew Gravini ended up being transported to Lahey Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Gravini at around 2:39 p.m. pulled over a Nissan Altima on Route 3 in Bedford for traffic violations. While stopped in the breakdown lane behind the Altima, the major's black Ford Police Interceptor was struck from behind by a Honda CRV SUV.

Gravini, assigned to the Division of Field Services as the commander of State Police Troop A, was in his cruiser when it was hit.

The impact of the crash pushed Gravini's cruiser into the right travel lane. The CRV then struck the Altima.

The driver of the CRV, a 64-year-old Wilmington woman, was transported to Lahey Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The operator of the Altima, a 24-year-old Lowell man, was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
