The Dallas Police Department launched a search Thursday for a suspect who opened fire on one of its patrol cars as an officer was driving.

The officer was traveling eastbound on Interstate 30 near Interstate 45 around 2 a.m. when the passenger-side window was shattered by gunfire, according to KTVT.

The police officer was wounded by glass from the window, but was not shot.

President of the Dallas Police Association, Sgt. Michael Mata, tweeted photos showing bullet holes in the windshield and passenger window of the cruiser.

"Real lives are affected by this false narrative of a war on the police!," he wrote. "Some coward shot at our officers!"

Matta later told the news station that he spoke to the officer about his close call.

"The high-powered round came through the side window and passed right in front of his face and shattered the front windshield and the glass shards and the blowback from that fragmented, and it all went into his face and it caused lacerations down his face," he said.

While investigators have not yet found the gunman, several shell casings were discovered at the scene.
