An Atlantic City police officer was injured Monday night while responding to call on an all-terrain vehicle, police said.
Officer Michael Mayer was patrolling the beach on an ATV when he was called around 7:35 p.m. to respond to the Taj Mahal Casino Resort for an unruly employee at the casino's Scores strip club. While attempting to respond to the club, which is expected to open next month, Mayer, a 14-year veteran of the department, crashed into the Taj Mahal. His lower right leg struck the corner of the building, police said.
Mayer was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus where he was expected to undergo surgery Monday night. He remained conscious during transport, and his injury is not life-threatening, police said.
Sgt. Daryl Hall and his K9, Max, apprehended the Scores employee who was identified as Jonathan James, 48, of Sicklerville, Camden County. The K9 was injured in the nose and mouth during the arrest.
James was charged with aggravated assault on police, injury to a law enforcement animal, resisting arrest and simple assault. He was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility on $50,000 bail.
The K9 will be evaluated at the Red Bank Animal Hospital for his injuries, which do not appear serious, police said.
