Md. Police Officer Burned After Car Bursts Into Flames

Prince George's County police officer suffered serious burns and the trapped driver died at the scene.

A Prince George's County police officer was burned while attempting to rescue a trapped motorist who died Monday afternoon.

The unidentified officer was the first on the scene of the crash that occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on Martin Luther King Highway in Springdale, according to a Prince George's County Fire Department news release.

The vehicle was overturned and the occupant was trapped inside.

The officer was attempting to remove the victim when the vehicle suddenly burst into flames.

The officer suffered serious burns to his upper body as well as lacerations.

He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries that officials said do not appear to be life threatening.

The driver that was trapped by the wreck died at the scene.
