PICAYUNE, Miss. -- A Picayune Police officer was involved in a one vehicle accident that could have been the result of a medical condition.

Mississippi Highway Patrol was called in to investigate the accident since it involved a police officer, 42-year-old Michael Odom. Trooper Roy Jacobsen said the accident occurred Tuesday afternoon at about 3:30. Odom was driving on Hunt Street just north of Bruce Street when he suffered from chest pain. The vehicle left the road on the right side, colliding with a power pole. Jacobsen said Odom did not recall the accident occurring.

Observation of the scene showed after the vehicle left the road it collided with the power pole, causing extensive damage to the front of the pickup truck, and knocked the pole down across the roadway.

Odom was transported to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg for treatment of moderate injuries, and the cause of the accident is listed as being due to a medical condition, Jacobsen said.

Capt. Chad Dorn with the Picayune Police Department said Odom was driving his city vehicle at the time of the accident. As for Odom's condition, Dorn said the officer was airlifted to Forrest General for treatment and medical staff there is checking to see if a medical condition was definitely the cause of the accident. Odom is expected to survive the injuries suffered in the accident, Dorn said.
