NATIONAL CITY, Calif. --
Two dangerous fugitives are in jail Wednesday morning following a high-speed chase that started in National City and ended in La Mesa, according to police.
According to National City Police, an officer doing routine checks for stolen vehicles, spotted a stolen SUV in the parking lot of the Grand Plaza Inn just after 10:00 Tuesday night.
Authorities gathered information about the occupants of the motel and realized at least one of them was wanted.
"We had information that he had been recently profiled on 'San Diego's Most Wanted' as an armed and dangerous fugitive," said National City Police Sgt. Julian Villagomez.
Police said 28-year-old Steven Gardner and his girlfriend Yvonne Casillas, 34, were both wanted for violating their parole. Their criminal records include multiple counts of burglary, auto theft, and drug violations. Casillas was recently featured on San Diego Crime Stoppers.
Both were staying at the motel but took off before police could approach them.
"We attempted to block off their exits of escape, however, they went through our blocks and over the embankments leading units on a high-speed pursuit," Villagomez said.
The chase reached speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. It ended when Casillas hit debris and crashed down an embankment on westbound state Route 94 near Spring Street.
Police said the pair was not armed when they were arrested and are now both in jail facing a long list of felonies.
