Virginia Police Officer Injured After Cruiser Struck
Charlottesville police Officer Mike Howard suffered minor injuries Monday afternoon when his cruiser was struck by a white Hyundai at the intersection of West Main Street and Ridge Street, police said.
According to Charlottesville police Lt. Ronnie Roberts, the unidentified driver of the Hyundai had committed a hit-and-run between the 500 and 600 blocks of West Main Street before running the intersection of Ridge and West Main.
After stopping briefly on the sidewalk in front of Midway Manor, the driver attempted a U-turn, but hit a stopped Honda Accord, ripping off its bumper. The driver then backed into Howard's cruiser before racing forward through the intersection again and hitting a utility pole.
Howard and the driver of the Hyundai, who Roberts said may have been suffering from a medical condition, were taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center. Roberts said Howard suffered an injury to his hand or arm in the accident.
