Wisconsin Deputies Tried to Stop Wrong-Way Driver

Two people were killed in the wreck in Waukesha County early Saturday morning.

Squad cars tried in vain to stop a wrong-way driver on I-94 shortly after midnight Saturday as vehicles swerved to avoid collisions on a stretch of freeway in Waukesha County.

The incident ended fatally for the wrong-way westbound driver, a 44-year-old woman from Pewaukee, and a 41-year-old man from Watertown whose vehicle was struck head-on in the Town of Delafield. He was heading east.

The Waukesha County Sheriff's Department is investigating the causes of the accident, which closed I-94 for more than three hours.

Calls poured into the Waukesha Communications Center as the westbound vehicle moved at a high rate of speed the wrong way, the department said.

Both drivers suffered extensive injuries and died shortly after the crash. Their names have not yet been released.

A sheriff's deputy witnessed the crash just in front of his squad.

The wrong-way vehicle was reported by other drivers at about 12:20 a.m.
