What to Know

  • A Maricopa County Sheriff's Office helicopter crew found a man stranded atop an overturned vehicle surrounded by fast-moving floodwaters in Tonopah.
  • Because of the dangerous conditions, the crew used a hoist rescue, lowering a deputy and rescue specialist to reach the stranded man.
  • The man was safely lifted from the vehicle and brought to shore before being turned over to the fire department.

An Arizona sheriff's helicopter crew made a dramatic rescue of a man sitting atop his overturned vehicle as floodwaters rushed around him.

Fox 1, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office helicopter and aviation crew, responed Tuesday to a report of a person stranded in floodwaters in Tonopah, the agency stated in a social media post that included footage of the rescue. When the helicopter reached the scene, the crew found a man sitting on top of an overturned vehicle that was stuck in a wash with fast-moving water around it.

Because of the hazardous conditions, the crew decided a hoist rescue was the safest way to reach the stranded man. A deputy and rescue specialist was lowered to the vehicle by the helicopter's hoist, and a strap rescue device was put on the man.

The two were then carried safely to the river bank. Once on dry land, the man was taken by the fire department.

"Thanks to the skill and quick response of our Aviation crew, the subject was safely brought to shore," the sheriff's office stated. "Excellent work, Fox 1!"
