Chopper Looking for Marijuana Crashes in Oregon

A helicopter looking for illegal marijuana crashed in eastern Oregon Monday afternoon

Officials told The Oregonian that engine failure caused the crash that occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. near Calamity Butte in Harney County.

The pilot, Thomas Levanger, lost control of the chopper as it was 400 feet off the ground. Neither Levanger or his passenger, Harney County Deputy Chris Nisbit, were injured in the crash.

The helicopter was being leased by the U.S. Department of Justice to conduct marijuana eradication.

The National Transportation Safety Board is currently conducting an investigation into the crash.
