ATLANTIC CITY -- A police officer was injured after his patrol car was rear-ended in the rain this afternoon.
Officer David Shapiro was starting his shift when he was heading down Albany Avenue, where traffic was backed up in the rain, Sgt. Monica McMenamin said.
As Shapiro's car sat in the backed-up traffic, the vehicle was struck by a car from behind, causing the patrol car to smash into the vehicle in front of Shapiro's.
Both Shapiro and the driver of the car in front of him were taken to the hospital, McMenamin said. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
The driver of the vehicle behind Shapiro's was not injured. The patrol car was towed from the scene.
Traffic was diverted for about 40 minutes while the scene was cleared. The accident remains under investigation, and no summonses have yet been issued.
