BECKLEY, W.Va. -- At first blush, you might think of the old "Batman" television series and fully expect to see the caped crusader and crime-fighting sidekick Robin astride a pair of them.
In fact, two new BRP Can-Am Spyder motorcycles will be used in battling the elements of crime.
Before long, the Beckley Police Department expects to have a pair of the new three-wheeled motorcycles in its fleet of vehicles, provided at no cost to the city through the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.
"We'll be using them for highway safety, DUI patrols, aggressive driving patrols," Police Chief Tim Deems said Wednesday.
"We'll also be able to use them for special events -- parades, escorts."
Deems said he isn't sure just what color the two motorcycles will be that are provided to his department but has been assured that each will be fully equipped with emergency lights, siren, police radios and radar.
"I'd like to stay with our theme of white with gold lettering," the chief said.
"I have seen pictures of other cities that have black-and-white, and they look pretty sharp."
